Quality of Experience in Future Television Services: User, Content and Connectivity Aspects

Purpose
This special session elaborates on the underlying network aspects of social television. Accepted papers will focus on different areas of the whole television QoE chain: user behavior, content encoding and perception, connectivity and interaction.

1. INTRODUCTION
As Future TV is moving to the multi-screen and device ecosystem it creates a challenging landscape where new QoE paradigms are emerging. Deploying TV solutions now requires analysis of the network of networks that will support the service, of the capabilities of the different devices that will render the experience and of the user response to different contents as well as to interactivity and social media integration.
2. SPECIAL SESSION SUMMARY
This special session intends to review the major building blocks of the new TV systems along 3 axes: user and interactivity, content production and perception and network and device connectivity.

2.1 User Behavior and Interactivity
There is no Quality of TV experience without mention of user behavior and interactivity. The special session will include papers that address the different mechanisms of interaction between the end users around the shared TV experience and how the user evaluation of QoE depends on both social and perception factors. This will include both real-time and asynchronous mechanisms as well as issues related to 2D vs. 3D TV. Both traditional and non-traditional interaction mechanisms for TV on different devices will be discussed. The emphasis will be placed on user centered design for both physical as well as graphical user interfaces.
2.2 Content Production and Perception
In Content we propose to request papers that address the main audio and video codecs used to encode source data. Codecs will include basics like MPEG4 and H264 but also AAC, AVC as well as approaches like SVC. These encoding mechanisms papers should be complemented by presentations on the protocols used to transmit the content. The session could also include architectures for client/server systems as well as other possible implementations. Finally, because it is central to business models, content protection papers will provide the special session audience with new directions and research dealing with social networking and community viewing aspects.

2.3 Network and Device Connectivity
Connectivity is essential to future TV. The traditional model of connectivity, based on total control by the operator, starting from content formatting to rendering is being challenged by over the top (OTT) applications, user generated content, co-viewing and mobile services. The result of this disintermediation is that the TV experience will be influenced by the networks that support it in terms of quality of service but also quality of experience. We will request papers on network architectures along with papers presenting the latest research on basic performance. Attention will be given to new aspects of wireless networking especially in the mobile world with new approaches to transmission and caching including peer to peer.
3. TARGET AUTHORS AND PARTICIPANTS
The targeted authors and participants are formed of TV hardware and software researchers, social and interactive TV researchers as well as information technology professionals moving into the QoE field.
PAPER SUBMISSION AND DEADLINES
All submissions to special session should follow the regular submission procedure and will be subjected to peer review coordinated by the Special Session Chair(s) and TPC Chairs.
Paper format is the same as for the general conference.
The papers must be submitted through EDAS, under the respective special session track. See paper format for more details.
The deadline (for all special sessions) is March 1, 2011.
