3G and beyond - The Future of Mobile Communication
Dr. Klaus-D. Kohrt
UMTS Forum, Vice Chairman
and
Siemens Communication Mobile Networks,
Senior Vice President Government & Industry Relations
ABSTRACT
After the 3G license auctions and the general downturn in telecommunications due to the burst of the Internet bubble, mobile operators are back in business. Subscriber numbers are growing strongly again and revenue is healthy in most markets. More and more third generation networks are going commercial and adding customers. But new technologies like WiMAX are attracting attention and there is already talk of Super-3G and even 4G. Users and operators alike are wondering which technology to rely on when and for what kind of services. Will some of them create disruptive changes in the market or will they peacefully coexist? And how will the end user be able to cope with the growing complexity of applications, devices and radio standards? This presentation will attempt to give an up-to-date status of the market and current technology rollout and put different technology alternatives into perspective. And finally, the key elements of the target architecture for a world of converged access-independent services will be introduced.
